ACTRESS ELISHA CUTHBERT isn't trying to be funny when she sings Willow Smith's
hit song "Whip My Hair," and that makes the attempt all the funnier.Cuthbert,
28, breaks into song while telling the story of the braids she wore in the pilot
episode of her new show "Happy Endings.""The lady who braided
my hair also braids Willow and Jaden Smith's hair," Cuthbert says with
a smile that leads to some comical head whipping. "God, those things were
so painful. I just kept hitting myself in the face with the beads."The
braids and the story are a far departure from Cuthbert's most famous role as
Kim, Jack Bauer's hapless daughter on the spy drama "24," and that's
the way Cuthbert likes it. Gone are the days when silly kidnappings and mountain
lions made Kim -- and Cuthbert by association -- one of the most ridiculous
characters on TV. Cuthbert's part on ABC's "Happy Endings" is comedic
for all the right reasons. This is particularly significant.
When "Happy Endings" began, Cuthbert's character Alex was painted
as the villain. She'd left her fiance Dave (Zachary Knighton, "FlashForward")
at the altar and the move tore Dave and their circle of friends apart. But viewers
later learn through a series of humorous flashbacks that Dave played a role
in the breakup because he took Alex for granted. No, runaway brides don't usually
grab big laughs but Cuthbert holds her own in a cast made up of professional
pranksters. Elisha Cuthbert is returning to television as the female lead in
CBS' one-hour pilot "Ny-Lon." Also cast in the ABC Studios-produced
adaptation of the British series are Caterina Scorsone and Johnny Whitworth.
